Recently I've seen a number of articles indicating that reward students (with money in some cases, with points/prizes in others) is proving successful in certain schools. While I can understand that this would work - doesn't it miss the point of teaching kids to become lifelong learners, to be curious, to get excited about learning new things?

I think this is ok. A while back I started giving my niece $5 for each A. It worked like a charm to improve her grades. It's no diferent than adults recieving bonuses and raises for work well done at thier job and helps prepare kids for the real world. It's just one tool, we should still encourage kids to have fun and enjoy learning. Just as we're encouraged to find a profession we enjoy.
