How to Improve your GPA - Step 1

October 13, 2008 – 10:20 am by Kim

Improving your GPAMaintaining a high GPA throughout your middle school and high school years not only helps you form positive study and time management skills, but also helps to improve your chances of getting into the college of your choice.

The first step in improving your GPA is to evaluate your weaknesses, including the courses you are doing poorly in and why you may be falling behind in those particular classes.

You can do this by asking each of your teachers for an up-to-date evaluation of your grade in their course. This will include how you have scored on past tests and quizzes, how you are scoring on homework assignments and can include participation points as well.

Highlight each of the areas you are doing poorly in for each class and then compare the sheets side by side. Look for any trends, such as low test scores, missing homework assignments or low participation points.

Next, create a to-do list or a list of goals for the next few weeks. On this list include the areas that need to be strengthened and the steps you are going to take to achieve these goals. Don’t be afraid to set high expectations for yourself, like turning a C into an A or improving your participation points by 50%.

Once you have created this list be sure to share it with your teachers. Show them the steps you want to take to improve your grades and ask for any input or feedback they may have. Sharing your academic goals with your teachers is a great way to show them your willingness to learn and improve and may make them more willing to help you out along the way.

Lastly, make sure you track the success of your goals. If one plan didn’t show any improvement, make a note of it and try a different approach. This will help you determine how you learn best and what steps and techniques to use in the future.
