Second Case of MRSA at Liberty High School

October 9, 2008 – 10:49 am by Kim

One week after 18-year-old Alonzo Smith, a football player at Liberty high, died from MRSA, another student has been infected.

Officials say that the student is responding well to treatment and that it is likely they will make a full recovery, since the infection was spotted quickly and treatment began early.

School officials still do not know the source of the disease and health officials were already called in to clean and sanitize the school. Cindy Lou Hartig, a school board member, says that parents should remain calm, as the school has passed health inspections and is said to be safe and clean.

MRSA is a potentially dangerous type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics, causing skin and other infections. You can get MRSA through direct skin contact with an infected person or by sharing personal items. In the case of the Liberty high, this may have been passed along through shared sports equipment.

Symptoms of an MRSA infection include: red, swollen skin, painful to the touch, warm to the touch and usually is accompanied by a fever. It becomes increasingly serious if it gets into the lungs or bloodstream, as it restricts the airways.

If you believe you have contracted MRSA, be sure to cover the infected areas with a bandage and consult a doctor right away.

  2. Schools are doing a great job of keeping students, parents, and communities up on the latest preventative measures to avoid the spread of infection. Not only as mentioned in the above article, shared items and skin to skin contact are recognized as sources to spread microorganisms of bacteria’s such as staph, e-coli, MRSA, etc., but touch surfaces as well. Triton Technology Group has a durable, non-leaching, treatment system available to protect virtually any surface 24/7/365 against the spread of not only bacteria’s but mold, mildew, algae, and yeasts for years. Until medical advancements are made and products and procedures once again position antibiotics to be effective, the TriBan system provides an additional layer of protection on touch surfaces. In high traffic, close quarters environments such as schools, day care, sports, corrections, health-care, etc.,this system just makes sense. While routine cleanings are great, (and will be needed with this system) cleaning and disinfecting do not leave residual protection much past the time they dry.
