Why Didn’t You Do Your Homework?

October 6, 2008 – 1:09 pm by Kim

Students are very clever and have excellent imaginations. I would say that at least once in every student’s lifetime, they fail to turn in a homework assignment.

It happened to me once and was enough to keep from missing an assignment again. It was a significant assignment that had completely slipped my mind and unfortunately accounted for 40% of our homework grade. Ouch.

I recently came across the McHenry County Blog and found a list of creative excuses from students as to why they did not do their homework.

I didn’t do my homework because…

  • I didn’t do my history homework because I don’t believe in dwelling on the past
  • I didn’t want the other kids in the class to look bad
  • Our furnace broke and we had to burn it to keep ourselves from freezing
  • I’m not at liberty to say why
  • I wanted to frame the detention letter you are about to give me
  • I have a solar powered calculator and it was cloudy
  • My mom used it as a dryer sheet
  • I lost it fighting the kid who said you weren’t the best teacher in school
  • My parents were sick and unable to do my homework last night. Don’t worry, they have been punished
  • I didn’t want to add to your already heavy workload
  • I spent all night at a rally supporting higher pay for our hard-working teachers

Now, while these are pretty funny excuses, I am offering them only for humor, not to help students get out of doing the assignments.

If the challenge of a homework assignment is standing in your child’s way of completion, simply get a tutor.

One buck can keep them from having to explain to a teacher why they didn’t complete their homework assignment.

  2. These excuses are hilarious- but not always based on laziness. Many students have issues and problems at home that prevent them from doing their homework. It is not always as simple as “simply get a tutor.”
