U.S. Top 10 Healthiest Schools
October 2, 2008 – 1:44 pm by Kim
One issue that is becoming ever more popular and important to parents is the health of their child’s school. It’s no wonder that this is so important, as students spend around 13 hours of their life in school, between pre-K through 12th grade.
So how does your child’s school rank?
Health Magazine conducted a survey on all U.S. public schools, asking each state to nominate their healthiest schools. The results are based on a combination of food and nutrition, fitness and activity, health education and healthy building materials and practices.
Here is how U.S. public schools ranked:
- You won’t find vending machines here, but you will find the principal roaming the cafeteria passing out fruit. You will also find healthy teachers, wraps and yogurt on the lunch menu and a state of the art physical education program that dropped student obesity by 2% in one year.
- This school should be the national model for fighting off student obesity. The school features a rock climbing wall, fitness center and a school-wide mission to keep students active.
- Starting at the Kindergarten level, students are educated about nutrition, personal safety, drug abuse prevention and lifetime fitness. Parent and teacher involvement have helped make these programs a success.
- Featuring the “Eat, Exercise, Excel!” program, this elementary school has not only upped their fitness, but also greatly improved their overall academic performance.
- This school features the “Fit in 15”, which is a twice weekly activity that is lead by teachers to get their students moving during the day.
- A healthy day starts with a healthy breakfast. Students and teachers at this middle school eat a nutritious breakfast together every morning in their classrooms.
- All white-flour has been eliminated from the cafeteria, as well as dessert, fried foods and anything high in sugar. These have been replaced with a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and other nutritious main dishes.
- The school has implemented their own Nutrition, Fitness and Health curriculum. Each student sets their own fitness goal in their PE class and monitor their progress as they work together to achieve their goals.
- This school believes that being healthy should be fun and engaging. Students engage in taste tests, farm visits, school gardening, community health related plays, annual visits from local dentists and more.
- A Lifetime Fitness and Wellness Center was opened to students, parents, teachers and administration for counseling on nutrition, fitness plans and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

One Response to “U.S. Top 10 Healthiest Schools”
Given the ‘theme’ of this trail I thought you and your readers may be interested in a new blog we have built (sponsored by McCain Foods) that focuses on school food. The site also features a questionnaire that can be completed by parents. Obesity is endemic in the USA and yet, often, school food is part of the problem. The blog is only going to be up for a short while and it would be great if your readers could have a look and add some comments.
The site is managed by me, Jeff Peel, and I’m an independent market researcher. I’ll read every comment personally.
I’m sure you will agree that the foods that your children are fed in school will have an impact on their well-being. We’re really keen to hear your views.
