50 Students Suspended For Fighting Video

Yes, you read that correctly – 50 students were suspended from Kentridge High School after posting a video of a student’s fight on YouTube.
The video displays two girls involving in a punching match with a large group of students standing around watching. The video was captured by a student’s cell phone.
The school’s principle saw the footage on YouTube and immediately suspended the two girls. In addition, any student seen watching the fight was also suspended, amounting to a total of 50 suspensions.
An even more alarming angle to the story is that the fight occurred off campus.
This begs the question of whether or not the principal has the authority to suspend students for activities that occur off campus. Many parents in the community are wondering if the principal’s discipline is justified.
Schools officials said that the action is necessary as they want to send a strong message that violence is simply unacceptable.
This is along the lines of posting things on Facebook and getting punished at school. While I do not advocate violence and find this behavior disturbing, I’m not sure that incidents occuring outside of school campuses should be punishable by the school.
I tried locating the video, but I believe it has already been taken down.

I understand that this is unacceptable behavior, but being susepended for watching? This is like an attractive nuisance..if you happen to be there , how can you not watch? The real question is did anyone call 911 or report it to someone?

I agree that this is unacceptable behavior.I go to Kentridge HS (sophmore), and we had an assembally today about the fight. We were told that alot of people knew that the fight fight was going to occur, and nobody reported it to any of the staff. I think this is why the other kids at the fight were suspended, because most knew about the fight and came to watch.
I do think that it was better of the school to take action when they found out about the fight instead of ignoring it. Maybe their actions will prevent any future fights as well.
