Tips for Preparing for the SAT and ACT

September 12, 2008 – 10:19 am by Andrea

It’s that time of year when high school juniors and seniors start thinking about college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT. For some students just the thought of the test creates anxiety. One well respected college, Wake Forest, has decided to end this anxiety for its applicants.

Martha Blevins Allman , director of undergraduate admissions for Wake Forest, announced the university has adopted a policy where the ACT and SAT scores are optional for admission. Acceptance will be based on the students GPA as well as the classes taken in high school.

For a list of other schools who do not require entrance test scores check out Fairtest.

For all those who still need to take the SAT or ACT for college admission, preparation can ease the worry and calm fears for the big test day. Below are several ways to prepare for the tests.

Online tutoring is a great way to get the help you need. The advantages of using online tutoring include staying in the comfort of your home. You chose the time of day that fits your schedule and the subject in which you need help. Additionally, right now you can get an unlimited SAT or ACT tutoring package for $149, much cheapre than a $500 test prep course.

Also, I would recommend purchasing one of the ACT of SAT prep books. Choose one that includes sample test. Once you have looked over the book, set aside a time to do the test with a timer. This will help you get a feel of how much time to spend on each question. Once finished, evaluate your answer to see if there is a certain type of question you have trouble with. Now you know the area to focus your study time on.

Check out the website freerice. Chemistry, English and Math are just some of the subjects you can review while helping to feed the hungry. My favorite is the English vocabulary. You are given a word with three choices for its meaning. For every right answer 20 grains of rice will be donated to The United Nations World Food Program. This is a wonderful way to practice SAT words while providing rice to end hunger.

  2. Thanks for the great ideas! I am a guidance counselor and always have people looking for alternatitives to the expensive test prep review companies. And using the timer is a GREAT idea for practice - to help them get a feel for the concept of exactly how much time they have.

  3. Yes I do agree that tutoring is a must for the SAT and ACT but I am just not ssure how much of it should be done online. This takes a particular discipline and I am not sure how many students actually have what it takes but you should not take the requirement for the tests away fully becuse that will take too much of the the pressure off about getting into college.
