Gloucester ‘Pregnancy Pact’ Principal Quits
August 13, 2008 – 9:42 am by KimIt appears that all the stress and media attention around the teen pregnancy pact at Gloucester High was too much for Principal Sullivan, who will resign this Friday, August 15.
Sullivan stated that he believed the actions of Mayor Carolyn Kirk and the Superintendent of Schools Christopher Farmer have undermined his ability to be an effective school leader. Sullivan has been with the high school since 1998.
The resignation mostly likely has to do with that fact that neither the Mayor or school superintendent provided support for Sullivan during the teen pregnancy incident. The mayor publicly announced that Sullivan had no proof of a so-called pregnancy pact and that when questioned, he said that he could not recall the details.
While these are very unfortunate circumstances, I believe that Sullivan has probably made the right decision. He has most likely lost the trust and respect of school administration and the students may no longer respect his authority.
So far in the current school year, there are 10 reported pregnancies at Gloucester, up from the average of 3 to 4 in past years.
