Late Friday, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill that would have required climate change to be added to future science textbooks. The Republican Governor concluded that Sacramento should not impose educational mandates.

He said, “I continue to believe that the state should refrain from being overly prescriptive in specific school curriculum, beyond establishing rigorous academic standards.”

Climate change is already covered in the curriculum but the bill would have California schools cover the topic under specific guidelines dictated by the state Department of Education and the state Board of Education. All science textbooks would have been required to cover the subject.

The bill was supported by most Democrats and two Republicans (26-13).
