Meet Linda Jarzyniecki; Math Teacher Extraordinaire
March 25, 2008 – 11:20 am by S TGood Tuesday. I am trying something new. And since I generally do not try new things, this post constitutes a double novelty:
- the new thing
- this in itself that I am venturing into something new
Here’s how it will work; my job is to bring sexy back to education. Call me the Justin Timberlake of K12. In today’s society, we are flooded with news stories of Britney Spears, Simon Cowell & Lindsay Lohan. But if someone said “Margaret Spellings“, most people wouldn’t have the faintest idea of who she is!
Hence the new concept of this blog; I am creating a category called “teacher spotlight”. This category will be dedicated to teachers who are making a difference. Educators who stand out and serve as an inspiration to students, parents and other teachers.
Without further ado, I introduce Linda Jarzyniecki. Linda is a high school math teacher at Greenville High in Alabama. She teaches algebra II, trigonometry and pre-calculus and is currently in her 20th year of full time teaching!
In 2007, Jarzyniecki was chosen by the USA Today to be part of the All-USA Teacher Team for outstanding K-12 teachers. Each year, USA TODAY honors 20 teachers, both individuals and instructional teams, as representatives of all outstanding teachers. Each teacher receives a trophy and a $2,500 reward — $500 for the teachers and the rest for their schools.
You can read more about Jarzyniecki here. Several highlights for me:
- A student fondly recalls when he was on the math team and on the day of the competition, Jarzyniecki came to the house and woke everyone up at 4AM
- Jarzyniecki uses humor to override reputation. This year, she wore a witch hat to class on the first day of school
- She teaches the only Advanced Placement calculus course in her county!
